JESSICA Leigh Smith left dozens of brides without dresses and in tears when her bridal shop was shut down last year – at a time she was planning her own extravagant wedding.
Ms Smith, 27, who was married at St John's Cathedral in Brisbane last weekend and is honeymooning in Hawaii, has been charged with five consumer law offences.
Four charges before Southport Magistrates Court allege Ms Smith wrongfully accepted thousands of dollars in payments from four women for bridal or bridesmaids dresses that she never supplied.
She also is charged with offering a prize of a free $2000 bridal dress at a bridal expo, but never providing the winner with her gown.
Each offence carries a maximum penalty of $220,000 and can result in a criminal conviction.
The Office of Fair Trading intends to seek almost $8000 in restitution.
In April last year Ms Smith, 27, was evicted from the Southport shop from which she had run Jonathan's Bridal for several years.
She was declared bankrupt in September, with more than $50,000 of creditors' debts.
A bridal wholesaler who claims to be owed more than $7000 from Ms Smith's Bridal Warehouse (formerly Jonathan's Bridal) also is taking Supreme Court action to have the company wound up.
Tania Dolesny, whose business, Heavenly Bridal, moved into the shop after Ms Smith's bridal boutique was shut down, has helped many distressed brides get their wedding dresses.
Heavenly Bridal has no connection with Ms Smith or Jonathan's Bridal. However Ms Dolesny said she felt sorry for the brides who had paid deposits or fully paid the other business for dresses they did not get.
Some found out their dresses had not even been ordered.
"I've got five daughters and I know how devastated they would be if something like that happened,'' Ms Dolesny said.
"With two of the girls we couldn't get them dresses in time (because) it was so close to their weddings.''
One bride, who did not receive bridesmaids' dresses that she had ordered from Jonathan's Bridal said: "It was so stressful.''
Ms Smith was all smiles last weekend when she walked down the aisle with fiance Peter Lakidis, 29, a travelcompany sales manager and former director of Jonathan's Bridal.
The couple had a reception for 183 guests at the Marquee at Victoria Park Golf Course following their city cathedral wedding.
Ms Smith and her eight bridesmaids arrived in Rolls Royces.
Wedding guests were ferried to the reception in a red double-decker bus.
A Southport magistrate on Friday adjourned Ms Smith's case for 12 weeks after being told she was overseas and wanted to seek legal advice on her return.
The Sunday Mail was unable to contact Ms Smith.
A bride and groom, along with their bridal party of 20, plunge into a Minnesota lake after a pier collapsed during their wedding photos -- before the ceremony.
