JEREMY Clarkson lashed out at a Top Gear producer because he was offered cold meats instead of a steak after a long day of filming, a witness has revealed.

The BBC suspended the 54-year-old on Tuesday following claims he punched producer Oisin Tymon, 36, on Wednesday night.

A witness told The Mirror that Clarkson, who had been drinking wine, used "every bad word you could think of" when he was told he couldn't get the £21.95 ($43.35) sirloin steak with potatoes, cherry tomatoes and wild mushrooms he fancied.

The chef at the luxury Simonstone Hall Hotel in the Yorkshire Dales, UK, had reportedly left for the night, with just soup and a platter of cold meats available.

"We were surprised at his (Clarkson's) reaction because we were all thinking 'surely soup is food'," the witness said.

"When they arrived just after 10pm Clarkson got angry. It was more like a scuffle. But he did swear using every bad word you could think of.

"The producer stood there looking quiet and embarrassed. He was being blamed for not arranging hot food. The general manager ended up cooking himself for the three presenters."

A local said the hosts and crew left the next day and Clarkson apologised for his outburst.

The hotel's general manager, Robert Scott, refused to comment on the alleged incident to The Mirror.

Clarkson was "on a final warning" when the BBC on Tuesday suspended the controversial host and cancelled coming episodes of his immensely popular motoring show.

The outspoken presenter has helped make Top Gear one of the BBC's biggest shows, drawing 350 million viewers a week in 170 countries.

While the BBC says it's investigating the scuffle before deciding on Clarkson's future, sources told RadioTimes.com the divisive host is considering quitting the BBC of his own accord.

The BBC's decision to postpone the final three episodes of the current Top Gear series could cost them millions, mostly in potential penalties for failing to deliver the series on time to other countries.

The British government's culture minister, Maria Miller, called the TV personality a "legend" and said the BBC "needs to be better at managing its talent."

"There are other organisations that have to deal with larger-than-life characters," she said.

Will Wyatt, a former director of BBC television, said the broadcaster could try to continue Top Gear without Clarkson, but "it would be a bit like the Musketeers without D'Artagnan."

"He is certainly the major personality in it and a huge part of its appeal," Wyatt said.

Clarkson appeared to be taking a relaxed attitude, even as reporters and photographers camped outside his London home.

Emerging, he announced he was "just off to the job centre."

Clarkson was given what he called his "final warning" last year after claims he used the n-word in unseen footage.
