Palmer United Party leader Clive Palmer announces former rugby league player Glenn Lazarus will lead the party's senate team.
Glenn "The Brick" Lazarus has released his first campaign ads for the Palmer United Party.
SENATOR for Queensland, Glenn Lazarus, today resigned from the Palmer United Party.
"I have today resigned from the Palmer United Party," Senator Glenn Lazarus said.
"This was a difficult decision.
Lazarus will now stand as an independent senator, having already changed his Twitter page to reflect his new status.
The former rugby league international took a parting shot at the Palmer United Party.
"I have a different view of team work. Given this, I felt it best that I resign from the party and pursue my Senate role as an independent Senator," he wrote on Facebook. "I am determined to do my best in representing, and being a voice for, the people of Queensland in the Australian Senate."

Lazarus, who entered federal politics at the 2013 election with the Palmer United Party, went on to thank Clive Palmer.
"I am deeply grateful to Clive Palmer for the opportunity to be involved in the party," he wrote.
"I sincerely wish Clive and his family all the very best for the future.
"I will miss working with my esteemed colleague Senator Dio Wang," he said.

Lazarus's resignation comes after Tasmanian Senator Jacqui Lambie quit the party in November last year.
She famously fell out with Palmer, who accused her of being a plant within the PUP.
"When you start a new party like our party, the established parties and others try to wreck it," Palmer said at the time. "She's been sent in there by someone to cause trouble and I think that's the reality of it."

Lazarus's decision will further weaken the PUP's voting power in the Senate.
