THE style of the 1970s is back in a big way, with flares, faux fur and felt hats a feature of the Myer autumn-winter fashion launch in Melbourne last night.

Jennifer Hawkins opened the show in a Toni Maticevski crisp white pant suit with flared pants, midriff- baring silver top and felt hat, and later closed it in a figure-hugging mustard Alex Perry gown.

She and 40 models showcased more than 200 looks for the new season from Australian designers such as Maticevski, Perry, Arthur Galan, Yeojin Bae, Ellery, By Johnny and Jayson Brunsdon.

Kate Peck stepped out in luscious long blonde locks, in keeping with the strong '70s theme of the show.

Maticevski, Cue, Arthur Galan and Karen Walker referenced 1970s trends.

These were contrasted against feminine '50s and '60s silhouettes featuring full and slimline midi skirts from By Johnny, Alex Perry and White Suede.

Myer ambassador Kris Smith sported the look for men, which included trenchcoats, knits and slim-fit suits.

Suits are also strong for women in the new season.

The monochrome of past seasons still dominates. Shades and textures of grey were prominent in several collections.

There were splashes of winter colour like mustard, burgundy, cobalt, midnight blue, jade, emerald green, as well as orange and pink.

Myer faces Lauren Phillips and Jodi Anasta, as well as newly signed ambassador Rachael Finch, watched the show from the front row.
