A GIANT cricketer, global stars of the game and a singing and dancing spectacular last night helped Melbourne hit the Cricket World Cup opening ceremony for six.

A crowd of 10,000 and a global TV audience of millions saw the Sidney Myer Music Bowl transformed into a day-night cricket match, complete with a pitch that paraded captains of the competing countries.

Fittingly, the star of the show was a giant dubbed "The Don''. The 5.5m puppet — that took 2½ months to build — produced the defining sequence of the 2½-hour ceremony.

Rising to his feet while the orchestra played around him, the puppet represented cricketers around the world.

With music portraying his beating heart, the 150kg cricketer took the audience on a journey from the dressing room to the crease.

He raised his bat in celebration, gave the audience a knowing nod and the six-week battle between 14 nations to become world champion was officially declared open.

Before that, indigenous performers, Scottish pipers, Bollywood dancers, a South African gumboot dancing duo and a British ballet performance set to a Beatles concerto paid tribute to every nation competing.

Daryl Braithwaite sang Howzat, Jessica Mauboy warbled Can I Get a Moment? and Tina Arena belted out Heaven Help my Heart.

Australia and England open the tournament at the MCG on Friday.

The 'G will also host the March 29 final.
