For five nights a week, all the tears and tantrums of a star-packed jungle camp will be beamed live from the fringe of Kruger National Park and into homes right across Australia.

No creature comforts, no mobile phones, not a personal assistant in sight — just a hammock, some basic staples and their own wits.

And much of the torment the celebrities endure will be decided by viewers.

Network Ten's head of entertainment Stephen Tate said what the high-profile campers get to eat will depend on their success in gruelling daily challenges.

"The audience decides who competes in what we call 'bush tucker trials' each day and the celebrities put forward to face what we throw at them are competing to win meals for their fellow campmates," Tate said.

"Then we've got what's called 'celebrity chest' — that's where we decide who competes in a variety of challenges. And we've got a number of ideas up our sleeve."

Those tests could involve physical feats, stomach-churning dares or close encounters with some of the local wildlife.

Of course, viewers will also decide who stays, who goes and ultimately who wins the competition.

Who will star in the debut season of the show, which has aired in the UK since 2002, remains a closely guarded secret.

While producers says keeping the cast under wraps is a key part of the format, one insider said they're concerned about B-Grade celebs pulling out if they feel too many D-Grade stars have made the cut. They will find out who shares their jungle camp on night one.

"As we've promised, (the first episode) is when the 10 celebrities will be revealed both to the public and to each other for the first time," Tate said.

"They'll then be given a safety briefing about the jungle environment and what to expect in the African wild, plus tips on interacting — or rather avoiding — the various predators."

After that, each celebrity will be dropped into the middle of the dense and harsh camp they'll occupy for several weeks.

They're free to leave at any time and simply need to scream "I'm a celebrity — get me out of here!" to be returned to the normal, luxurious lifestyles to which they're accustomed.

But battling on will increase the celebrities' chances to earn cash for their nominated charities.

"They're undergoing this ordeal to test themselves but also to raise some money for worthy causes — a substantial amount of money," Tate said.

Those going in to the jungle can take with them one luxury item. Tate said negotiations on what that might be have been fierce.

"Some have been haggling for some odd things. One suggested mascara was a medical exemption — the condition is being on television, I suppose. We won't be allowing that without a doctor's certificate."

I'm A Celebrity ... Get Me Out Of Here! is coming soon to Channel Ten.
