AMERICAN Apparel has sparked controversy with a window display of mannequins wearing lingerie with pubic hair, which has divided social media.

The US clothing label unveiled the window display at its East Houston store in New York. It features three mannequins wearing white underwear, with pubic hair added beneath the sheer garments.

District Visual Manager Dee Myles has defended the decision to do the display, saying it is not meant to be offensive, rather, it is meant to celebrate '"natural beauty".

"American Apparel has always been a company that celebrates natural beauty," she said.

"I think that it's a continuation of that celebration. It's more so showing a natural form in our lingerie. I think it's to spark conversation rather than controversy over what we deem beautiful and sexy," she told Styleite.com

Ms Myles also said the display was supposed to spark conversation, and was not done purely just for "shock value".

"It should be offensive that people are offended. That's how I feel. I mean, I was a women's study major in college. I already sent photos of the window to my mom. So, yeah I think it's having us internalise if we are uncomfortable, why that is? Because that's more natural than if the mannequin did not have it. We are all really excited. It's not about being controversial. It's about sparking conversation. It's not supposed to be shock value," Ms Myles also told Styleite.com

The company has already asked shoppers and their fans what they think on Twitter, encouraging them to share their views.

However, social media praised and criticised the brand for doing it. Some think it's too graphic and others think it's a bold, impressive move.
