TRAIN commuters are at war, armed with a petition calling for Sunbury passengers to be banned from catching V/Line services.

The online petition, dubbed "ban the bogan", wants Sunbury commuters off "our V/Line" following the electrification of the line to the northwestern suburb last month.

Previously Sunbury commuters caught V/Line's Bendigo-service train, but can now catch both it and Metro trains.

They have been encouraged to board the Metro services.

Sunbury commuters believe the online petition is offensive. It contains 75 signatures - mostly from commuters in Kyneton, Gisborne and Woodend.

Law clerk Rose Le Guier said she hadn't seen the petition, but she had heard people criticising Sunbury passengers "like they are some kind of ferals".

"Sunbury people are being treated like they are some kind of other race," Ms Le Guier, 35, said.

"(V/Line staff) say, 'You should be catching the Metro' .

"But we have every right to catch the V/Line, so they shouldn't complain to me."

Glenda Matheson, 62, said the petition made her feel like not getting the train anymore.

"What business is it of theirs to say who gets on where?" she said.

"What do they have against Sunbury residents all of the sudden?"

"Bloody oath I'm offended by the petition, I'm p----- off."

George, who didn't want to give his last name, said he got "looks" from other passengers when he got on and off at Sunbury.

"I'm a regular commuter, treated like a second-class citizen by the stares and comments from other passengers and conductors, despite it having been made clear we have every right to be on V/Line trains," he said.

The petition claims Sunbury commuters are abusing the system by fare evading and causing overcrowding.
Public Transport Users Association president Tony Morton said the organisation didn't agree with compartmentalising people based on where they caught the train.

Caitlyn Hammond, of Public Transport Victoria, told Sunbury Leader: "PTV asks all passengers to be courteous and respectful towards V/Line staff and other passengers at all times".
