Our Joe's dressed to excess

Following a story that a man donned 70 items of clothing to avoid paying excess baggage on a flight, The Daily Telegraph's resident clothes horse Joe Hilderbrand has taken up the challenge.

WELL, it looks like the fashion trend to watch in 2013 is layering. The great thing is that it's stylish and practical.

Say you're at the airport and you suddenly get told you're going to have to pay an excess baggage fee. Simply remove the items from your suitcase and put them on. You'll look good and feel good too.

"Wait," I hear you say. "No one would ever be that ridiculous."

But according to reports, one man was that ridiculous. In fact, as of yesterday, you can make that two.

An article in China's Guangzhou Daily newspaper that was picked up by the website Digital Spy and has since gone viral, reveals a man put on 70 items of clothing to avoid an extra baggage charge at an airport.

The report said the passenger turned up at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport in China looking like a "sumo wrestler". "The man's luggage exceeded the weight limit. He did not want to pay the extra baggage costs, and thus took out and wore more than 60 shirts and nine pairs of jeans," the website said.

"Wanting to board a flight to Nairobi, Kenya, he was stopped by the metal detector and had to undergo a full body search. In his numerous pockets were batteries, thumb drives and device chargers".

Naturally, this seemed like a fanciful story. As if a single person could even wear 70 items of clothing at once.

And so the theory was put to the test the only way this newspaper knows how, by subjecting me to great physical and psychological trauma.

First we went to our local Vinnies shop and bought 70 items of clothing. This involved even more than nine pairs of trousers and at least 20 shirts.

However, being a thinking man, I reasoned that in order to reach the target there would have to be a focus on small items of clothing. For this reason you may notice I am wearing about half a dozen ties and an unusually large number of women's scarves (the latter had nothing to do with the story, I was just trying to accessorise).

It is also fair to say I was wearing more hats than most people normally deem useful.

The result was a complete, if technical, victory: 70 items of clothing on at once, an outfit that weighed 15kg.

It's fair to say I didn't particularly feel like jumping on a long-haul flight to Africa, at the very least I would have requested an aisle seat.
