TWO young air force officers will swap the violence and danger of Afghanistan for the serene surrounds of Oxford University after being awarded prestigious scholarships.
Flight Lieutenant Cavin Wilson will study economics and Flying Officer Alex Barbaro will examine how to use ultra-wide frequency bandwidth to "see'' through objects under the $50,000-a-year Sir John Monash scholarships for two years.
The hallowed halls of Oxford University will be a far cry from the war-torn regions of Afghanistan where both have served this year.

His will spend the two years studying how to better utilise ultra-wide band communications technology for humanitarian efforts, such as rescuing earthquake victims trapped under rubble.
Flying Officer Alex Barbaro from No. 1 Combat Communications Squadron (1CCS) in front of a Landrover Parakeet Satellite Terminal Assemblage.
"The big advantage is that it can pass through objects which makes it ideal for humanitarian applications such as earthquake relief,'' FO Barbaro said.
He said he wasn't expecting to uncover a "silver bullet' but plans to advance the technology so it can be used more widely in both the military and civilian worlds.
Former South African 25-year-old Flight Lieutenant Wilson from Townsville is interested in "game theory'' - the study of mathematical models of conflict and cooperation between intelligent rational decision-makers.
He will also study how economic theory can be better used to inform government decisions.
"I have wanted to study at Oxford for a long time and it is one of the best establishments in the world in which to learn economics,'' he said.
In addition to his studies and job with the RAAF, Flight Lieutenant Wilson, a logistics officer based at RAAF Williamtown near Newcastle, is a co-founder of the "Soldier On'' charity for wounded soldiers. FO Barbaro is a fund raiser for the charity.
"It has been a very hectic year,'' Flight Lieutenant Wilson said.
Both officers graduated from ADFA in 2009.
The scholarship scheme for 10 young Australians is administered by the Victorian university that bears the name of the legendary World War 1 Australian General Sir John Monash.
