CHART-toppers Eskimo Joe are asking fans to fund the making of their new album.

The Australian band, whose Black Fingernails Red Wine album sold over 300,000 copies in 2006, are seeking $40,000 to cover recording costs.

The trio amicably extricated themselves from their major record label Warner Music and are the biggest local act to align with "crowd funding" company Pozible.

"Hopefully this goes well, this could be the future for what bands do," Eskimo Joe's Kav Temperley said. "There's no one else involved apart from the people who love the music and the people who make the music. You're producing an album for people who are into your music, there's nobody inbetween."

Eskimo Joe play their hit single "Echo" from the new album Ghosts Of The Past.

Acts including Ben Folds Five and Amanda Palmer have funded albums through fans in the last year.

Eskimo Joe fans will be able to invest in the making of what will be the band's sixth album through a series of packages (see full list below), starting from buying a song for $1 to pre-ordering the album on download, CD or vinyl, as well as a personal acoustic performance ($850), a smashed guitar ($1500) right up to the band helping produce your song in their Fremantle studio ($4000) and a BBQ for 20 where the band will cook for $6000.

"It keeps people directly involved," Temperley said. "In this day and age there's no mystery, people know everything, so we're putting it out there directly that this is what it takes to make a record.

"We want $40,000 to mix, master and engineer a record, we want you to be involved and invest in it. People can contact us and tell us what they have liked about the band in the past, what they'd like to see us do and we'll try and take that on board and incorporate it."

Temperley admits the pressure of following up the runaway success of Black Fingernails cast a shadow on the follow up albums Inshalla (see video below) and Ghosts Of the Past (see video below).

"At the start it was exciting to get on a record label. But at a certain point the records stop being about you and your fans and you find yourself making music to try and impress the people at your record label. Which is stupid. It's good they champion the record and we worked with some awesome people at Warner but they're not the people who will go out and buy the album. You should make music for yourself and your fans, not try and make singles or ten iTunes bonus tracks or whatever.

"I don't want to diss any of our other records, but there was definitely a point after Black Fingernails where we definitely felt we were working for the man as opposed to working for ourselves. Who knows if this will work, but that's what's fun about it as well, to go into something with absolutely no knowledge of what the outcome will be. It's exciting to throw yourself head first into a new world."'

The new record is also set to be a "seachange" for the band who are experimenting with new styles.

The album will be produced by former Gerling member Burke Reid, behind acclaimed releases for Oh Mercy, Papa vs Pretty and The Drones.

"Burke is quite left of centre from what we've done before," Temperley said. "The conversations have been hilarious - he tells us 'I'm not really a fan of what you guys were doing in the past, but there's something magical in these new demos. But I do have to say I'm not a fan of what you did in the past'. And it's like 'Yeah, we know! You mentioned it!' So we're keen to see what he brings to the band. In the past we've been famous for not letting go of control, so for this album we've had to agree we're just going to be the band, that's going to be really freeing for us. It feels like we've gone back to making our first album where the playing field is wide open. Bringing a naivety to the music again is fun."

The band will start recording the album in March for a mid 2013 release.
