A CONTROVERSIAL slimming product endorsed by Kim Kardashian has been banned from sale in Australia by the medicines watchdog.
QuickTrim Suppress and Burn was one of three products cancelled from the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods this week.
Reducta FatBlaster tablets and BergaMet Mega cholesterol and metabolic support tablets were also cancelled from the register.
A spokeswoman for QuickTrim said the company was appealing the TGA decision.
She said the Suppress and Burn supplement was in production and had not yet hit shelves in Australia.
"The cancellation of QuickTrim's Suppress and Burn is currently under ministerial review following an appeal submission to the Department of Health," the spokeswoman said.
"All QuickTrim products currently sold in pharmacies around Australia... are completely unrelated to the recent cancellation advice."
Kardashian travelled to Australia last month to promote QuickTrim products, which are branded with images of the American reality TV star.
The products are advertised as weight loss agents, with some claiming to "decrease fatigue" and "reduce hunger."
But a review by the Therapeutic Goods Administration found "there was insufficient evidence to support the indications for the (Suppress and Burn) product."
This is not the first time QuickTrim's weight loss products have come under fire.
In March, the Kardashians were named in a class action lawsuit filed in the Southern District of New York, which argued there is no reliable scientific evidence to support the product's claims.
The plaintiffs claim the main ingredient of the weight-loss products formula is caffeine, which is not an effective or safe diet treatment according to the US Food and Drug Administration.
The customers say they simply would not have brought the products if they were aware of this - and claim the testimonies of the Kardashian sisters who have endorsed the product are completely false.
FatBlaster Reducta was also cancelled this week due to "insufficient evidence to support the indications for the product."
A spokeswoman for PharmaCare - who manufacture FatBlaster Reducta - said the TGA had issue with the wording of the claim on the product, not the product itself.
"The matter is simple. The TGA has an issue with the words `appetite suppressant' on the product however they have no issue with the words `hunger reduction'," she said.
The spokeswoman said the company have started manufacturing the same product but replaced the term `appetite suppressant' with `hunger reduction'.
"The net effect is that the identical product now exists on the shelf... and the TGA is fully satisfied there is evidence to show it works," the spokeswoman said.
"This is an example of bureaucratic semantics at its most petty, a problem many companies are having with the TGA."
Monash University Professor Ken Harvey said it is common for companies to change the wording on their products to continue sales in Australia.
"This is the company response if they are cancelled by the TGA. They will change a word or change an ingredient and get back on the registry," he said.
"It just shows the TGA is a toothless tiger."
President of the Australian Medical Association, Dr Steve Hambleton, said consumers should be wary of easy weight loss solutions.
"Fad diets are not a solution. A long term change in the composition of food away from high fat sugar and salt to a less energy dense food will help," he said.
"A long term change in the amount of exercise performed is also essential. Apart from losing weight there are enormous health benefits from exercising just 15 minutes per day."
