The Bali Nine duo have spent their first night on Indonesia's 'death island' ahead of their execution.

BALI Nine member Scott Rush, whose death sentence was overturned, has spoken about the pending executions of Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran.

Rush, 29, told The Weekend Australian through a friend that he is "shocked and heartbroken" by the imminent executions.

"I am praying for Myuran and Andrew and for the other condemned prisoners that even at this time mercy can't be shown. I send love and prayers to the families and loved ones. May God bless them all,'' he reportedly said.

Rush had his death sentence changed to life in prison but he hopes that may be changed to a 20-year term.

Rush's father, Lee, helped police nab the Bali Nine after he asked a lawyer and family friend, Bob Myers, to contact the Australia Federal Police when he became suspicious that his son was smuggling drugs.

One of Scott Rush's legal team, Robert Welfare, said while his client was saddened by Chan and Sukumaran's imminent death any reports that he was feeling guilty were "ill founded".

It comes as Chan and Sukumaran's families were denied access to the island jail where they are on death row.

As outrage builds over Indonesia's "undignified" treatment of the Australians, the pair were held in isolation cells in Besi jail on Nusakambangan while their distressed families bunkered down in a hotel a ferry ride away in Cilacap.

Australia yesterday lodged a formal complaint to the Indonesian ambassador over offensive photos of the pair with smiling officials who posed for selfies on a flight from Bali during Wednesday's heavy handed prisoner exchange.

Indonesia was last night yet to respond to Prime Minister Tony Abbott's request for a further phone call with President Joko Widodo.

"Sometimes it takes a little while for that request to be acted on," Mr Abbott said.

"But I do want to assure people that in a whole host of different ways, we are continuing to make our position crystal clear."

It came as former foreign minister Bob Carr urged Australia to form a pact with other countries to tackle drug trafficking into Indonesia in exchange for the Bali Nine duo on death row.

The government should do some "quick work" with countries like Brazil and France, who also have citizens on Indonesian death row, and present a package to help the nation's drug problems, he said.

The Chan and Sukumaran families will spend another weekend of torment, unable to see the two men since they were transferred to the place of their deaths on Wednesday.

It is understood that Australian officials in Cilacap however continue to push for access on the weekend.

Family visit days at Besi prison, where the duo are held in a block of four cells along with a Nigerian on death row, are only Monday and Wednesday and authorities say they cannot relax the rules for the Australians without doing so for all the other prisoners there.

Lawyers however are allowed to visit every day during the week.

"It has been a tough few days. Mum is very anxious to see Andy, as any parent would be under these circumstances," Michael Chan said yesterday.

"We are just hoping to get there (the prison) to see him."

Mr Chan said that not being able to see and hug Andrew and hold him close was traumatic for their mother and all family members.

Indonesia's Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said on Friday there was no intention to damage her country's relationship with Australia but she called on Australia to respect Indonesia's sovereignty.

"We understand the request because it's every Government's effort to protect their nationals however, once again the issue of sovereignty of law of other countries kindly needs to be respected," Ms Marsudi said.

And at the Cilacap port, where a prisons ferry takes visitors and guards to the seven jails on Nusa Kambangan, Indonesia's anti-drugs movement Granat staged a small protest, setting fire to an effigy of a corpse wrapped in white sheet.

Calling for the executions to be expedited, they carried banners, decrying drug use and sang the Indonesian national anthem as they carried the effigy.

"Execution, death, the only way to stop narcotics," one banner read.

Another said: "Support for execution to death now!!!".

Before the white wrapped corpse was set on fire, a note on it said: "We love Indonesia. Save Indonesia generation. Go to hell criminal drugs."

But only moments after setting fire to the effigy, it was extinguished.

The protest consisted of only about 10 people with a megaphone and amplified the message that has come from Jakarta and the country's president now for the past six weeks about the damage wrought by drugs

on the country.
