IKEA has banned hide-and-seek games in its mazelike stores after thousands of people signed up to play at various Dutch outlets.
More than 32,000 people registered on Facebook to participate in the children's game at the retailer's Eindhoven store, along with 19,000 in Amsterdam and 12,000 in Utrecht in April and May.
But after catching wind of the social media invitations, the homewares giant shut down the events.
"It's hard to control," spokeswoman Martina Smedberg told Bloomberg. "We need to make sure people are safe in our stores and that's hard to do if we don't even know where they are."
Now organisers are scrambling for alternative venues.
The events were inspired by an Ikea-approved game held in a Wilrijk, Belgium, store last year.
About 500 people hid in fridges, cupboards and under blue shopping bags in a massive game organised by Elise De Rijck who had put it on her list of 30 things to do before her 30th birthday.
"Sometimes it's fun just to do some childish things," she told Bloomberg. "Ikea is like an extremely large living room."

In 2010, the furniture chain discouraged an event planned in Melbourne, Australia, and alerted police but didn't officially ban the game, Huffington Post reported.
