A FATHER yesterday collapsed and died minutes after a road rage incident escalated into a fight in a shopping centre carpark south of Brisbane.
Ateliano Posiano, 63, collapsed on the pavement outside the Logan Central Plaza Shopping Centre about 9.40am.
In an incident lasting about four minutes, police said the 63-year-old exchanged punches with a 24-year-old, with shocked onlookers breaking up the fight between the two.
Mr Posiano walked 50m before he fell to the ground.
Police said he was in his Ford Territory when the incident started with the other man, who was in a Holden Commodore.
"We understand that the Territory was parked near a pedestrian crossing and that, at some stage, the Holden Commodore has overtaken it within the carpark complex and parked," Detective Senior Sargeant Michael Thiesfield said.
"The Territory has then parked," he said, before the fight took place.
Shopkeepers told The Courier-Mail the two men entered the shopping centre and started arguing outside the Coles supermarket before walking outside.
Police were unable to confirm the version of events last night.
"The younger guy tried to walk away and the older guy followed and picked a chair up (inside the centre)," one shopkeeper, who asked to remain anonymous, said.
"The older guy followed him for a bit and then went and put the chair back down."
Police believe both men threw punches.
"Part of that altercation has gone on to the roadway of the shopping complex and then gone back on to the footpath of the shopping centre," Sgt Thiesfield said.
The fight continued until bystanders stepped in and separated the men.
Members of the public, as well as doctors from a nearby medical centre, tried to resuscitate him but he died.
Mr Posiano's shocked niece last night said "he was a great man" but was too upset to comment further.
His daughter also returned to the scene as more than a dozen mourners paid respects.
A 24-year-old was last night assisting police.
