THE father of Socceroo Ryan McGowan faces at least weeks more in jail amid an extradition application over an unsolved murder in Scotland.
James McGowan applied for bail this week in an Adelaide magistrate's court after spending 13 months in prison since Scottish police sought his extradition over the 1999 murder of McGowan's former brother-in-law.
His application will be reconsidered next month, with Scottish detectives leading a cold-case murder enquiry anxious to interview him on British soil.
It has emerged that Ryan, 25, played at the World Cup in Brazil with his father's case hanging over him.
Last month Ryan signed for Dundee United in the Scottish Premier League, moving back to Scotland where he had previously played for Hearts after a spell in China.
James's McGowan's other son, Dylan, plays for Adelaide in the A-League.
A warrant was issued for James McGowan's arrest on December 3 1999, days after Owen Brannigan was stabbed to death in the Scottish town of Coatbridge, 16km east of Glasgow.
Brannigan had married McGowan's sister, Carol, in 1975, but they divorced in 1984. James McGowan was reportedly in Scotland at the time of Brannigan's death for his mother's funeral.
Since then, as a dual British-Australian citizen, McGowan has been based at his home in Adelaide until Scottish police conducted a review of the evidence in the case and sought his extradition.
Remarkably it has emerged that he made several return visits to the UK in the intervening period despite the outstanding arrest warrant.
One was to attend the 2012 Scottish Cup final in which Ryan scored for Hearts. In an interview at the time, Ryan said his father called him from Edinburgh out of the blue to say he was there to see the game.
"He just found himself sitting at home thinking , 'This might be the only time I get to see my son in a cup final.'
"Dad wanted me to keep it quiet though, so he could just turn up at Hampden [Park] and sit next to my aunts and uncles as if it were the most natural thing in the world," he said.
In December 2013 James McGowan was arrested by Adelaide police at the request of their counterparts in Scotland under the Extradition Act of 1988.
More than nine months ago he was refused bail and since has been in custody waiting for the Federal Attorney General, George Brandis, to rule on the extradition application and whether the evidence presented is strong enough.
The Daily Telegraph approached the Attorney General's office for comment, but none had been received at the time of publication. Ryan McGowan's manger said his client would not want to comment.
