FIVE Russians from the Chechen region have been detained in southern France on suspicion of preparing an attack, local prosecutors say.

The five suspects were detained on Monday in the town of Beziers near the Mediterranean coast, around 70km from Montpellier.

France is on high alert following three days of attacks by jihadists earlier this month in Paris that left 17 dead.

Meanwhile, a 33-year-old Algerian man with suspected links to the jihadist cell dismantled by Belgian security forces last week has agreed to be extradited from Greece, a justice source says.

The suspect "wants to prove his innocence" and a Greek prosecutor has also agreed to meet Belgium's request for the extradition, the source said on Tuesday.

According to police, the suspect — who was arrested on Saturday — had previously served jail time in Greece on a robbery conviction but was released nearly a year ago.

The jihadist cell, which the authorities in Belgium said was plotting to kill police, was dismantled last week in an anti-terror raid in the east of the country that left two suspects dead.

Belgian media have named Abdelhamid Abaaoud, a 27-year-old Belgian of Moroccan descent who remains at large, as the presumed mastermind of the cell.

Of those arrested in the southern France raids one lived in Beziers, and another "probably" in Montpellier. The addresses of the other three were still being sought.

The prosecutor said that certain "products" had been recovered during their searches, without giving further details.

Chechnya, a highly restive and predominantly Muslim region in Russia, has seen the largest demonstrations against cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed published by French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo last week.

Authorities said about one million people attended the state-organised rally against Charlie Hebdo in Chechnya on Monday.
