ENGLAND'S one-day cricket captain is at the centre of a blackmail attempt relating to an exchange of messages with an Australian woman.
Legal letters have been sent on behalf of Eoin Morgan and the England and Wales Cricket Board, warning against reproducing confidential messages between the pair.
In a statement last night the ECB said it received two emails in the past 48 hours from a person asking for a five-figure sum of money, who was making accusations against Morgan.
The ECB's Paul Downton said: "There were references to a relationship that Eoin Morgan had five years ago with a single Australian lady.
"It was brief relationship five years ago and what appears to be a fairly deliberate attempt to exhort a sum of money from the ECB."
Hobart workplace safety consultant Nick Emery has been accused of trying to blackmail and harass Morgan and the cricket board.
Mr Emery told the Herald Sun he was in possession of "sexually based'' messages exchanged between his partner and Morgan.
"I have got a fair bit of interesting content regarding Eoin Morgan with a woman who isn't his girlfriend ... there's sexual content,'' he said.
"It's my partner.''
He said he wanted to "catch her out in a big way''.

He was a late withdrawal from a planned media appearance in Hobart yesterday.
London's Metropolitan police have been contacted following action by the cricket board's lawyers.
UK police would not comment last night.
"The individual, who comes from Hobart, demanded that the money be paid before the first ball was played on Friday," Mr Downton said. "We contacted the Metropolitan Police and a brief investigation tracked down this individual.
"He has now apologised saying it was not intended to go this far. We will not allow anyone to distract the players or the England captain."
Mr Emery said he had an urgent meeting yesterday with English cricket board members in Hobart, which had settled the matter.
He admitted he had contacted media over messages between his partner and Morgan, but he would not release the messages to the media.
He said he had not intended to commit blackmail and was not chasing hush money.
"It's done. It's dealt with. I did the wrong thing in the wrong state of mind," he said.
"I was in a very angry and bad head space.
"Everything is sorted now. They were very understanding. We came to an agreement.''
The Herald Sun has not seen the messages, nor did it offer money for them.
Mr Emery said he had stumbled upon the messages when his partner backed up her phone on his computer.
"It was a stupid mistake on her behalf,'' he said.
"I knew something went on between them a long time ago.''
He said some of the messages referred to "some interesting Skype calls''.
He said he had called the number to confirm it was Morgan's, but had not confronted either of them.
"What p----s me off is if you hear about Shane Warne and others like that,'' he said. "They think they are bigger than the next person. I can't even watch the game at the moment. It's not a good feeling.''
