Are these the lamest Wheel of Fortune guesses?

WELL that's embarrassing.

Two Wheel of Fortune contestants really missed the mark last week after trying to guess a popular American landmark during the hit TV show.

All but two of the letters were revealed — but that didn't seem to help.

The female contestant in the middle incorrectly guessed "The Pointed Desert."

Even with a second chance, her answer — "The Printed Desert" — was wrong.

Host Pat Sajak turned to the next contestant, James.

Although he was in the lead with $US9000 ($11,300), James repeated the same wrong answer ("The Pointed Desert") — twice. He ended up losing $US8000.

"It's not The Pointed Desert, no matter how many times you say it," Sajak said, shaking his head in disbelief.

In the end, the third contestant got it right, declaring "The Painted Desert" to relieved applause.

The Painted Desert in Arizona is a 93,500-acre desert stretching from Cameron, near the south-eastern rim of the Grand Canyon, to the Petrified Forest near Holbrook.

The beautiful badlands feature rocks in colours from deep lavender to red, orange and even pink.
