AUSTRALIA'S best-rated hotels for 2014 have been revealed by travel search engine www.trivago.com.au. Based on ratings by over 120 million travellers, you won't believe which accommodation came out on top.

Prepare to be gobsmacked: the winner was ... Travellers Oasis Cairns Backpackers in Queensland, with a 94.20 rating.

The backpackers is a short walk from the Cairns City centre, shops, cinemas, banks, supermarkets, restaurants and the waterfront, not to mention being close to dive schools. It even has a pool surrounded by hammocks. And facilities include two fully equipped kitchens, barbecue area and laundry facilities.

According to Trivago, quirky places like Travellers Oasis perform well in user ratings because smaller properties often go the extra mile to personalise service. And that personal experience is what motivates guests to go online and write something nice.

Among the comments about Travellers Oasis are: "One of the best! The hostel was amazing," "What a beautiful little oasis!" and "The friendliest staff I've come across!"

As for the Aussie region with the best online hotel reputation, the winner was Yallingup in Western Australia, with hotels rated at an average of 86.22. Tasmania's Stanley followed with 86.11.
