IT'S a Christmas challenge Yule never forget.
A sales manager nearly died after chugging one litre of eggnog so quickly, he inhaled some of the creamy beverage into his lungs.
Ryan Roche spent three days in hospital after downing the liquid in a record 12 seconds, shattering the previous record of 22 seconds, during a December 10 soiree.
The Utah man told New York Daily News he was about to leave the holiday party when organisers brought out the eggnog.
(Eggnog is a drink made from beaten eggs, cream and flavourings.)
Refusing to back away from a challenge, Mr Roche drank the carton in record time without taking a breath, winning a gift certificate for a steak dinner.

"When they said go, I just opened up the carton and pretty much just poured it down my throat," he told BuzzFeed. "I didn't take a breath of air."
Moments later, however, he began coughing and gasping, struggling to breathe.
He said a few hours later, still shaking and panting, a friend drove him to the hospital.
Doctors told him he had eggnog in his lungs, which caused an infection.
"Initially I felt very nauseous and pretty sick," he said. "After I was put on antibiotics and an IV I was no longer nauseous."
He was put on oxygen and antibiotics and released from the hospital after three days.
"The next few days my body would change from having a fever to shivering non-stop," he said. "It was like every hour on the hour it would change."
Roche says he recovered his strength after a week.

Incredibly, Mr Roche said the experience hasn't turned him off eggnog.
"I was never a big fan of it to begin with," he said. "I could drink it again, but it's not my drink of choice."
