TESLA Motors unveiled a supercar quick, all-wheel-drive version of its Model S sedan Thursday along with a slew of new safety features.
The announcement put to rest a week of feverish speculation after Tesla CEO Elon Musk hinted about the news in a tweet last week.
The Model S is currently a rear-wheel-drive car, which has hurt sales in snowier European and American climates. The new 'D' variant from Tesla adds a second motor to power the front wheels that will help propel the car from 0-60mp/h in 3.2 seconds. That's as fast as some supercars.
The all-wheel-drive version will have a top speed of around 250kp/h, compared with 210kp/h for the current version.
When describing the car's performance, Tesla CEO and suspected real life Iron Man Elon musk said the car operates in three modes - luxury, sport and "insane."
Paint us keen.
On top of the performance improvements, there are new 'autopilot' features that can do things like detecting red lights, stop signs and pedestrian so it can stop accordingly. The radar that detects it can work through fog, rain and snow between speeds of 8km/h and 240km/h.
Other creepy but call new features include the ability for the car to self park, meaning you can just step out of the car when you get home and it will park itself in the garage for you. Or even having the car connect to your digital calender and meeting you outside when it knows it is needed.
Tesla hasn't yet said when the all-wheel-drive version will go on sale, how much it will cost or if it will be available in Australia.
