JAKE White or Michael Cheika? Find-a-coach is such an urgent task for Australian rugby that the Wallabies may fly to Europe on Friday without a coach leading them.

Ewen McKenzie's sudden and sad exit from the job he coveted for more than a decade before ascending to the job with such high expectations last year is gone from his life after just 15 months.

That McKenzie is privately appalled at the venom of the attacks on his former Wallabies business manager Di Patston and insinuations of his relationship with her is certain.

White recently accepted a post as technical adviser with Tonga for a tour of Europe next month.

He is certain to be able to get out of that position if the Australian Rugby Union decides the hard-edged 2012-13 ACT Brumbies coach is the man they want in a crisis.

White does have his 2007 World Cup-winning pedigree with South Africa and said he left the Sharks recently to pursue further international aspirations heading to the World Cup.

John Eales, George Gregan and Phil Kearns give their thoughts on the shock resignation of Ewen McKenzie and his tenure as Wallabies coach.

The ARU may come knocking but the wave of support behind Cheika as Super Rugby-winning coach of the NSW Waratahs is imposing with the power base of the game so obviously Sydney-centric.

Cheika produced a wand in two seasons to turn the serial underperformers of Super Rugby into a title-team with hard love, volatile, at times, energy and drive.

With former coach Robbie Deans firing a shot at the petty state-biases and power bases that fracture Australian rugby in his recent book, the head coach role at the Wallabies is not for the faint-hearted.

McKenzie was not.

What is still to come out on this sordid outcome, where a fine man is gone, will come to light in the days and weeks ahead.

Kurtley Beale is still in the dock for Friday for his vulgar texting to Patston.

McKenzie's tenure of 22 Tests produced 10 wins and a draw for a winning percentage below 50 per cent.

ARU boss Bill Pulver said the process to find a replacement has now begun.

"We hope to have the new head coach in place before the team leaves for the Spring Tour on Friday."

"Criteria for the role includes identifying a coach who can lead us to victory in next year's Rugby World Cup; represents Rugby's core values; has the support of the playing group; and is available.

The All Blacks have left the Wallabies heartbroken by scoring a try with three seconds remaining in the Bledisloe Cup. A Colin Slade conversion confirmed a historic victory for the Kiwis.

"As part of this process, we will also identify structural improvements to the off-field element of the Wallabies, with a senior leadership role to be created to support the team.

"We will work with the incoming coach on that structure, with a solution to be in place as soon as possible."

McKenzie made the stunning announcement following Saturday night's heartbreaking loss to the All Blacks, revealing he hadn't told the players and staff until after the match.

"I resigned this morning at 10 o'clock," McKenzie said.

"I wrote to Bill (Pulver) and some of the board members and discussed I guess a lot of what's been going on over the last period of time.

"I've been a very proud contributor to Australian rugby but I feel at this point in time there's a bunch of reasons (which) I've put in writing to Bill.

"I had a discussion with him this morning and my intention was win, lose or draw that I was going to announce that resignation tonight.

"I've only just told the team.

"I didn't actually advise the team or any of the staff before the game, I've just done that."

ARU chief executive Bill Pulver said Australian rugby had lost "a terrific bloke and a great coach".

"I did not ask Ewen to resign, but understand his decision. He informed me this morning of his intention to resign, regardless of tonight's result," Pulver said.

"Ewen is a world-class coach and a world-class individual who has been committed to playing entertaining rugby for our fans since he started in the role.

"During his tenure, he has overseen a seven-match winning streak, drew against the All Blacks and beat South Africa — all achievements that had not been met in the previous year.

"We sincerely wish Ewen well for the future professionally and personally."
