FOR the second time in 24 hours Sydney was ravaged by a powerful storm, with wild winds, torrential rain and lightning strikes causing mayhem from the city to the Blue Mountains.
As many as 20 motorists had to be rescued from their flooded vehicles as the heavy downpour turned low lying streets from Rockdale to Milperra into raging rivers.
At the height of the storm, which hit Sydney at 9.20pm, 5500 homes in Sydney's south lost power as police, firefighters and SES attended more than 400 weather-related emergencies.
Sydney Airport had recorded wind gusts of up to 100km/h and received 35mm of rain in a few hours, forcing delays of both domestic and international flights.
The freak weather conditions resulted in spring snowfalls in Blackheath and adjoining suburbs in the Blue Mountains.
The snow and ice caused the closure of the Great Western Highway in both directions between Bathurst and Blackheath. City residents reported a "massive lighting bolt" hitting the Sydney Tower at about 10pm.
"There were several lighting strikes, before one caused a direct hit and then it just went dark," Ian Ross reported on social media.

"We've been advised by the Bureau of Meteorology that Sydney is expecting some rainfall later on this afternoon somewhere from around 5pm onwards. They're also expecting rain and winds leading into tomorrow, into the early hours of the morning, but then beginning to clear around sunrise."

He said they have already responded to 129 calls after heavy rain lashed the south coast around Bateman's Bay through to Bermagui.
"Quite a lot of rainfall and we've had some flooding to properties and some leaking roofs and some tress down as well," he said.
Including last night's storm, they have responded to 286 jobs, with the majority for the Sydney metropolitan areas including west, south and north of Sydney, as well as for the Illawarra, South Coast, Hunter and mid-north coast areas.

Widespread showers up to 50-70m can be expected near the coastal areas of Sydney, while isolated areas could see up to double that, a Bureau for Meteorology spokeswoman said.
Showers will ease during the night, with most of the heavy storm front is expected to move off the coast by midnight.
It will be a gloomy start to tomorrow, with lighter showers expected to hang around until mid-morning.
Warnings are also in place for morning gale-force winds between 35-50km p/h, easing across the day to 25-35 km by the afternoon and temperatures set to hover at a wintry 18'C.
