THIS veggie burger looks, browns and bleeds like any burger you would throw on the barbie. But it is completely vegetarian.
Patrick Brown, a Stanford biochemistry professor and CEO of start-up venture Impossible Foods, has invented The Impossible Cheeseburger.
The Impossible Cheeseburger says the secret is in using "plant blood", a bioengineered concoction that looks like blood and has the same taste as it is derived from the same molecule found in haemoglobin — the ingredient that makes a burger taste like a burger.
"Livestock is an antiquated technology," Mr Brown told The Wall Street Journal. "The system that we use today to produce meat and cheese is completely unsustainable, it has terribly destructive environmental consequences."
The aim of impossible foods is to create a more sustainable and environmentally friendly source of food.
It also has some strong support — it has secured $75 million in venture capital, including cash from Bill Gates and Google Ventures.
The patty costs about $20 to produce and involves harvesting five plant species in large quantities.
Impossible Foods has been testing the burger in undercover food trucks, is expected to begin selling to stores as early as the end of next year.
