US hits terror targets in Syria

The US and Arab allies have launched strikes from the air and sea against Islamic State militants in Syria.

US President Barack Obama says the participation of five Arab nations in air strikes against militants in Syria "makes it clear to the world this is not America's fight alone."

Mr Obama said the joint fight against the Islamic State will take time but is vital to the security of the United States, the Mideast and the world.

The U.S.-Arab air strikes targeted the group's headquarters in eastern Syria.

Mr Obama say the U.S. is "proud to stand shoulder-to-shoulder" with Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and the United Arab Emirates in conducting the strikes.

"We will not tolerate safe havens" for groups threatening the US or allies, Mr Obama said.

The strikes against the Khorasan group early on Tuesday were separate from the wave of US-led bombing raids targeting the IS.

Meanwhile, US air strikes have also killed a group of al-Qaeda veterans, members of the Khorasan group in Syria, who were suspected of plotting an imminent attack on Western targets, the Pentagon said overnight.

The raids targeted the group's training camps, an explosives and munitions production site, a communication building and a command and control centre.

US intelligence agencies publicly cited the Khorasan group as a serious threat only in recent weeks, describing the militants as seasoned al-Qaeda veterans who had set up a sanctuary in Syria to plot, construct explosives and recruit Westerners to conduct attacks.

The US officials say Khorasan extremists pose a threat just as potent as that presented by the IS group.

Syria's President Bashar al-Assad said Damascus backed any international effort against "terrorism," after a US-led coalition against the Khorasan jihadists launched air strikes in the country, state media reported.

"Syria will continue to resolutely fight the war it has been prosecuting for years against ... terrorism," state news agency SANA quoted him as saying.

"It supports any international effort to fight against terrorism," he added, as he met Iraq's national security adviser in Damascus.

The US says it did not request permission from Syria nor co-ordinate before conducting air strikes against Islamic State militants and other terrorist groups.

"We warned Syria not to engage US aircraft," State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki says.

"We did not co-ordinate our actions with the Syrian government. We did not provide advance notification to the Syrians at a military level, or give any indication of our timing on specific targets," an email from Psaki reads.

She says Secretary of State John Kerry did not send a letter to the Syrian regime.

Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem said he had received a letter from Kerry about the strikes.
