Thinking of a change? Source: News Limited
ARE you sick of sitting at your desk watching cat videos for 10 hours a day? It might be time for a career change.
Official figures for the June quarter showed Australian wages actually going backwards in real terms. The Australian Bureau of Statistics wage price index rose 2.6 per cent, well below the inflation rate of three per cent.
With that in mind, many might be tempted to look at alternate employment.
Not to worry — it's a big wide world and there are more ways to make money than you can shake a garbage picker-upper stick at.
Here are eight of the more unusual professions that pay surprisingly well. Be warned: some retraining may be required.
CATTLE STATION MANAGER ($90,000)
The salary for an outback cattle station manager generally starts at around $90,000. On the next rung down are overseers, who make between $60,000 and $70,000, followed by the head stockman on around $55,000. The food is good, too.

DUMP TRUCK DRIVER ($84,000)
Operating heavy machinery is hard work, and it pays well — especially at the mines. According to PayScale, the median salary for dump truck operators in Australia is $84,000, although Seek regularly advertises positions for more than $100,000.

LIFE COACH ($200,000)
If you love helping people and think you can "empower them to win" by teaching a "psychology-based life skills program", you could anywhere from $60,000 to $200,000, according to coaching company YB 12 Coach. Sign us up.

PHILANTHROPY MANAGER ($100,000)
Do you have the "capacity to generate significant gifts from high net worth individuals"? No, this isn't ICAC. Organisations such as private schools rely heavily on contributions from well-to-do donors, and a philanthropy manager's job is to keep the largesse flowing.

SOMMELIER ($50,000)
Also known as a wine steward, a sommelier specialises in matching wine with food, usually in high-end restaurants. While the median salary in Australia is $50,000, according to PayScale, experienced sommeliers can make well over $100,000.

CROUPIER ($65,000)
A croupier or dealer oversees gambling activities such as cards or roulette. Salaries start at around $40,000, increasing to around $65,000 for senior positions. Keep in mind, that doesn't include hefty tips from customers received under the table — or should that be, over the table?

UNDERGROUND DIAMOND DRILLER ($180,000)
No, not drilling for diamonds. Exploration diamond drilling is used in the mining industry to probe known ore deposits. Salaries generally range from $100,000 to $180,000. As with many mining jobs, however, the shifts are brutal.
