Queen ‘sick of smartphones’

THE Queen thinks people have become obsessed with their mobile phones and misses eye contact with crowds, a US ambassador has revealed.

US ambassador to the UK, Matthew Barzun, told Tatler magazine that the Queen confessed she finds it "strange" to see nothing but mobile phones following her every move.

"She was essentially saying 'I miss eye contact'," Mr Barzun said.

The Queen made the candid confession during a "nice chat" when Mr Barzun presented his credentials after starting as ambassador last year.

Last year, the Queen's aides expressed dismay after a visit to the BBC offices, when she was greeted by staffers with smartphones and tablets taking photos and video as she toured the building, reports The Telegraph UK.

However, the Queen has been known to be more tolerant of selfies. A teenager snapped a quick selfie with Her Majesty as she toured Belfast in June.

And she made headlines when she photobombed a selfie taken by Australian Hockyroos player Jayde Taylor at the Commonwealth Games.

During a meeting of the Privy Council during Tony Blair's tenure, the Queen was obviously unimpressed when a minister's mobile phone went off.

"Oh dear," the Queen reportedly told international development secretary Clare Short as she dug through her handbag to turn off her ringing phone. "I hope it wasn't anyone important."

The Queen has a mobile phone since 2001, when Prince Andrew gave her one as a gift and saved the numbers of the royals in it for her, reports The Telegrah UK.

It is believed she uses the phone while making calls when outdoors at estates such as Balmoral. Princes William and Harry have also taught her to use texts.

In addition to dishing on his private chats with the Queen, Mr Barzun also confessed to Tatler he was sick of British food.

"I must have had lamb and potatoes 180 times since I have been here. There are limits and I have reached them," he said.
