A DISTRAUGHT and stressed Kylie Maynard broke down in tears upon entering the hotel room where her missing husband's personal belongings were spread out yesterday.

Surrounded by her husband's family, Mrs Maynard had travelled to Nusa Lembongan Island, off Bali, to find out what has happened to her husband, Peter, who has vanished.

SEARCH CONTINUES: Aussie surfer, Peter Maynard, still not found

Mrs Maynard was able to confirm for police that one of his surfboards and a rash vest was missing. And police have called on boat operators and other businesses to continue searching for the Sunshine Coast man, who has now been missing more than 10 days.

Mr Maynard's brother John, who also travelled to Nusa Lembongan, told of the family's desperate hopes that Peter is found fit and healthy.

He revealed that his brother had not been seen since the morning of August 27 when he went surfing.

"What we do know is that Peter had breakfast at his hotel that morning and then went surfing at either Shipwrecks, Lacerations or Playgrounds surfing break. He was wearing a bright blue surf vest and dark-coloured boardshorts and his surfboard is a white Hammo brand," Mr Maynard said.

This contrasts with the hotel owner and police who say that the 45-year-old was last seen having breakfast at the hotel on the morning of August 26.

Mr Maynard said the family understood that the conditions that day were "relatively benign" although other surfers spoken to by News Corporation have said the swell was big at that time.

"We will continue to work with local police, the Australian Consulate and surf and rescue authorities in the hope that together we can find Peter and bring this matter to an end. We implore anybody who knows anything to please notify the relevant authorities and we ask that our family's privacy be respected during this difficult time," Mr Maynard said.

The family had travelled by boat to Nusa Lembongan and then met police at the Nusa Indah Bungalow, on the beachfront and where Mr Maynard was staying.

He had checked in on August 23 and was due to check out on August 28. When he didn't police found that all his belongings, including phone and wallet and passport, were left in the room.

The iPad was plugged into a charger, the phone was on the bedside table and his wallet next to the sink.

After finding Mr Maynard's belongings in the room and when he failed to check out, the hotel notified police on August 28. Police say they notified the Australian Consulate in Bali on August 31 by letter about the missing person case but that they did not manage to speak with consulate officers on the phone until Wednesday, September 3. Mrs Maynard was notified by the Consulate that evening.

Yesterday Mrs Maynard and the family spent almost two hours inside her husband's hotel room, No 205, where they spoke with police, including Nusa Penida police chief, Nyoman Suarsika.

Mr Suarsika said he had explained the situation to Mrs Maynard and asked if her husband had any health problems or other issues but she had said there was no health or other problems.

Asked if it was possible that Mr Maynard may have drowned, Mr Suarsika said: "We can't make any conclusion yet. We have to investigate. Usually, if he was drowned, the surf board would be found somewhere."

He said police would continue the investigation and the family had supplied a photograph of Peter for police to use in the search.

At the time that MR Maynard is believed to have disappeared one surf operator has told News Corporation that the swell was massive and that he saw a man surfing 10 foot waves alone in an area called No Man's Land.

Christopher Capel, a Frenchman who runs Monkey Surfing on Nusa Lembongan Island, told News Corporation that on August 27 and 28 that the swell off the island was huge and that about 15 surfers, including Australians, were in the area.

Mr Capel told News Corporation that one of the surfers paddled away from the main group, to No Man's Land, where they saw a big set of waves coming in. He said the wave was about 10 feet and that he saw the surfer catch a wave and then disappear with the foam. Mr Capel didn't see him again.

He has no idea who that surfer was, had never met Mr Maynard and assumed that after catching the big wave whoever it was had gone ashore.

"I think because it was too much people on the break we were on, he went paddling to the other one. I was on a different surf break and I could just see someone 3-400 metres away from me in No Man's Land," Mr Capel recalls of the man he saw surfing that day.

"It was a big set coming and we could see from far away he managed to catch one wave and after the big set was going he went with the foam. Everybody thought he was gone back to the shore," he said.

Mr Maynard had been travelling alone and hotel staff say he kept to himself and appeared to be relaxed and enjoying his holiday.

The hotels' owner, Made Marayanta, said that Mr Maynard had checked into the hotel about 1.30pm on August 23. He had booked and paid for the room for five nights through website Agoda, paying 400,000 Rupiah or about $36 per night. The room had a fan but no airconditioning.
