NICK Kyrgios's US Open upset of Russian Mikhail Youzhny has delivered the Australian teenager a glittering piece of tennis history — a superior first grand slam season to Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray.

The Canberra firebrand's Flushing Meadows elimination of Youzhny gave Kyrgios his third seeded scalp at the slams, a tally bettered among contemporary greats only by Rafael Nadal at the same stage of his career.

ATP Tour's Emirates statistics illustrate the pure quality of Kyrgios's first complete season at the four majors and, tellingly, at almost exactly the same age as Nadal, Federer, Djokovic and Murray — the four men who have dominated tennis since 2005.

Having turned 19 between the Australian and French Open, Kyrgios' victims include world No.1 Nadal (seeded 2nd) and 13th seed Richard Gasquet (both at Wimbledon) and 21st seed Youzhny in New York.

Due to face Italian Andreas Seppi at the US Open, Kyrgios has the chance to better a career-best of reaching a major quarter-final.

When Federer, then also 19, completed his first full season in 2000, his best result was the fourth round of the French Open and his highest-ranked victim was No.38 Michael Chang.

The Swiss maestro has since compiled an unparalleled record of 17 majors.

Current world No.1 Djokovic's 2005 season was not as impressive as Kyrgios's.

Aged 19, Serb twice reached the third round with the highlight being US Open victory over world No.24 Mario Ancic.

Djokovic has since progressed to seven grand slam singles titles.

Murray gave notice of imminent greatness in 2006, when aged 19, he erased the disappointment of first-round losses at the Australian and French by downing fifth seed Andy Roddick at Wimbledon.

The Scot then upstaged Chilean 11th seed Fernando Gonzalez at the US Open.

Murray advanced to win Olympic, Wimbledon and US Open titles.

No player of the modern era has a record to match Nadal, who banished five seeds in his first two grand slam tournaments in his first full season.

Aussie Nick Kyrgios produced another major scalp in his fledgling career, ousting Mikhail Youzhny in four sets to advance to the second round of the US Open.

The Spaniard rolled Youzhny at the 2005 Australian Open before unleashing a remarkable surge to claim the first of his nine French Open crowns.

Just shy of his 19th birthday, nailed Federer (1), David Ferrer (22), Gasquet (30) and Sebastien Grosjean (23) at Roland Garros.

Since the 2005 French Open, Federer, Nadal, Djokovic and Murray have claimed 36 of 38 majors with only Juan Martin del Potro (2009) US Open and Stan Wawrinka (2014 Australian) breaking the sequence.

If Kyrgios overcomes tough Seppi tonight, he could then face 16th seed Tommy Robredo for the right to challenge third seed Wawrinka.
