CONVICTED paedophile Rolf Harris is enjoying his last night of freedom before he faces a certain jail sentence when he appears before Southwark Crown Court tonight to hear his fate.

The British Home Office has revealed the man who was formerly Britain's favourite Aussie entertainer may also be deported at the end of any sentence if he is jailed for 12 months or longer.

A spokeswoman said no decision was usually taken until towards the end of any sentence served but there were exceptions which include certain Commonwealth citizens and for family reasons.

It is understood Harris, 84, who has made England his home since 1952, never took out British citizenship. He married Welsh-born sculptress Alwen Hughes in 1958.

After the jury returned on Monday with convictions of 12 sex attacks on four women as young as seven, the trial judge Justice Nigel Sweeney warned Harris to expect a prison term.

"Given the conviction on all 12 counts, it's inevitable that the type of sentence uppermost in the court's mind is a custodial sentence," the judge said.

Currently on conditional bail, Harris faces a maximum of 24 years, two years on each of the assaults.

Harris was believed to have been sorting out financial matters as he was seen leaving his multi- million dollar home in Bray, Berkshire on Wednesday with his lawyers.

Meanwhile, the BBC has rejected calls for it to investigate Harris's successful career at the corporation, during which time he made his name hosting shows for children, animal lovers and art fans.

The child protection society, National Association for People Abused in Childhood (NAPAC), had called on the BBC to launch an investigation after "turning a blind eye" to Harris's abuse.

The entertainer's legal team have 28 days to lodge an appeal on his behalf if they consider his sentence tonight to be too harsh
