THEY'RE bigger, better and simply easier to use, and they could be headed your way soon.
Boeing has unveiled its latest design for overhead lockers on planes, in a move that could put an end to the mile-high carry-on battle.
Designed to address the fact that more passengers are bringing larger items on board, the new "Space Bins" are now available as an optional feature on its Next-Generation 737 and 737 MAX planes. They will be able to stow six bags, which is two more than the current bins can hold. That's an extra 62 bags per plane.
Sweet!
These calculations are based on a standard size carry-on bag measuring 23 centimetres x 36cm x 56cm.
The aircraft manufacturing giant said the new design will also make storing bags easier as they are lower and thus easier to reach. They will also be easier to close as they don't require an assist mechanism.
"We're taking the Boeing Sky Interior, which is hugely popular with our airline customers and passengers, and building on that success by adding even more room for bags," Boeing spokeswoman Beverly Wyse said.
Alaska Airlines is the first to snap up the new bins, but it's yet to be seen whether other airlines will follow, and if they will make their way onto planes in Australia.
A Virgin Australia spokesman told news.com.au it has 23 of the Boeing 737 Max planes on order, with the first due to be delivered to the airline in 2019. He said it's definitely a design worth considering.
"We are looking into the 'space bin' innovation but will not be finalising plans for the layout of the aircraft until 2016," the spokesman said.
Meanwhile, Qantas has yet to investigate, with a spokeswoman saying: "We are not currently looking at these but are continually looking at innovative cabin interior solutions."
For many passengers, the news couldn't come soon enough. The carry-on baggage craze continues to spiral out of control, so much so that a Twitter campaign was born in the hopes of putting an end to the madness by shaming hose with ridiculously large bags.
Guide to the overhead bag capacity on 737s:
• Standard bins (introduced in 1998): 77 bags
• BigBins (2002 onwards): 125
• Pivot Bins (2010): 132
• Space Bins (2015): 194
