Dumb Americans know nothing about the World Cup

Football interview prankster Baha Salamah has taken to the streets of New York to find out just how much Americans know about the FIFA World Cup.

THE biggest sporting event on Earth is about to happen in Brazil, and as you'd expect, Americans know absolutely nothing about it.

A serial prankster called Baha Salamah has exploited that ignorance for his own nefarious, hilarious gain, quizzing a bunch of his compatriots on the streets of New York City and capturing the embarrassing results on camera.

We've transcribed the best bits, which you can read below. "Q" refers to the questioner, Baha, and "A" refers to his victim, who is answering Baha's questions to the best of his less-than-impressive ability.

1. ON THE LOCATION

Q: "You don't know where the World Cup's going to be at?"

A: "Ahh, umm, wait a minute, somewhere in South America. Argentina?"

Q: "Brazil."

2. ON THEIR TEAM

Q: "Who will you be supporting?"

A: "Spain. Real Madrid."

Q: "Real Madrid? What do you think Real Madrid's chances are in winning the World Cup?"

A: "Big time. I think they'll win. I think they'll take it."

Of course, Real Madrid is a club side, and it won't be competing at the World Cup. The respondent here was wearing a Real Madrid jersey, so he really should have known that.

3. ON THE LAST WORLD CUP

Q: "Where was the last World Cup held?"

A: "Last World Cup? Uhhhh. Portugal? Wasn't it Portugal? No, not Mexico, uhh ... It was Brazil this year ..."

Q: "You support Spain, right?"

A: "Yes, we do."

Q: "Spain won the last World Cup."

A: "Spain did not win the last World Cup, it was Brazil. Brazil won the last World Cup."

Q: "Nah man. It was Spain."

A: "... Oh yeah."

For the record, the last World Cup was held in South Africa, and Spain did win it.

4. ON THE GOLDEN BOOT

Q: "Who will be the top scorer of this World Cup?"

A "Uh, who's the uhhh, Spanish guy? It's Messi."

Messi's actually from Argentina, but otherwise that's not a bad guess.

5. ON A SUPERSTAR WHO WILL MISS THE WORLD CUP

Q: "Do you know who Gareth Bale is?"

A: "Yeah."

Q: "How do you think he'll do in this World Cup?"

A: "Ahhh, I think he'll do good. As long as he puts his heart to it, I think he'll do really good."

Q: "Which team does he play for?"

A: "Real Madrid."

Q: "In the World Cup."

A: "Oh, in World Cup. Urgh. Damn, I forgot where he's from like, Italy, right? I think it was Italy. Portugal is Ronaldo."

Gareth Bale is Welsh. Unfortunately, his team didn't qualify for the World Cup finals, so we won't get to see him in Brazil.

6. ON AMERICA'S CHANCES

Q: "Do you think we can win it?"

A: "Hopefully. I mean, the US is not a third world country, so hopefully we can put the right amount of money in and get the right players."

7. ON THE INTERVIEWER BEING PICKED IN THE US TEAM (HE'S NOT A FOOTBALL PLAYER)

Q: "What do you think about youngster Baha Salamah being called up?"

A: "Umm, I'm excited to see what he can do. Umm, they can, yeah, they've got a lot of youth on their team, so ..."

Q: "He's a young guy, but some people are really questioning his abilities."

A: "I've only seen him play one time, but he looked good that match."

Yeah. That match never happened.

8. ON SOMETHING OTHER THAN FOOTBALL

Q: "Anything else you want to say?"

A: "Let's go Rangers, 3-1 over Montreal!"

He's talking about ice hockey. Since this segment was filmed, the New York Rangers have won their playoff series against the Canadiens. Apparently, compared to that, the World Cup isn't such a big deal.
