LOOK out, Fatty Vautin. Hell, even Peter Overton.
Cronulla Sharks winger Beau Ryan – perhaps best known for his performances on the Footy Show – announced his retirement from the NRL at just 29 years of age Thursday night, then declared his ambition to forge a long-term TV career on Channel 9.
Ryan suffered a recurrence of a neck injury that required off-season surgery in a May 18 clash against his former club Wests Tigers, leading to suggestions he had played his last game in the NRL.
An MRI scan later revealed there was no further damage to his C-6 and C-7 vertebrae but the Sharks advised Ryan to take time away from the game before making a decision on his playing a future.

On Thursday night's Footy Show, Ryan made it official, saying he was retiring from the game effective immediately.
"It was a hard decision. Obviously, with my injury but after looking at my (family) ... if something would have happened to me I would never be able to forgive myself. My family comes first."
The talk then turned to Ryan's future at Channel 9, with the young talent revealing he had a long lunch with Channel 9 boss David Gyngell on Wednesday to discuss his options.
"I consider Channel 9 as a family," Ryan said, before addressing Footy Show host Paul Vautin.
"I admire what you do (Vautin), I know you've been here 20 years but that's half the time I want to be here. I'm not saying I want to be in your chair, I like this chair."
Sensing his opportunity, Vautin jumped in.
"Here they come! Many have tried," he joked, referring to Ryan taking his job.
Ryan, unperturbed, continued: "I'm in a position now where I get to make people laugh and I get to make people smile and I want to do it for the rest of my life."
Vautin did not let up on the joke.
"The good news of course for Channel 9 viewers is that Beau has signed on with 9 full-time," Vautin said.
"He's hosting Today and … a couple of cooking shows, 60 Minutes. Peter Overton, see you later he'll be reading the news and probably doing everything on this show."
Ryan made his NRL debut for the Tigers in 2007 where he spent six seasons before joining the Sharks in 2013.
He finishes his career having played 126 NRL games.
Following in the footsteps of Matty Johns and his Reg Reagan and Trent the Flight Attendant characters, Ryan has gained popularity with his "Beau Knows" segment and two popular characters of his own: DJ Yallah, a Lebanese-Australian DJ from Bankstown; and Donnie Palmer, a Titans trainer who is obsessed with doing stretches.
Ryan has also caused controversy with his skits, particularly when mocking his fellow NRL players.
Jamie Soward took issue with Ryan earlier this season over a performance (see video below) in which he dressed in a pink Panthers jersey and headgear and portrayed the Panthers playmaker with a lisp.
