A warning note posted at a local hostel has warned travellers.
"Please be aware of young 25-35 male "farmer cowboy" going by the name of Joe Sturt (possible real name is Jack) he is asking around local hostels, accommodation for travellers to work on Contract Mustering teams jobs in WA/NT area," it reads.
"HE IS NOT WHO HE SAYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
"7 travellers from Kimberley Croc Backpackers YHA, Kununurra 12/6 went with him to Halls Creek and within 24 hours they had been reported missing persons been sent off by him into different dead end locations with no petrol," the poster reads.

Backpackers are being told not to have anything to do with the mystery man.
"Who knows his intentions but he is not a trustworthy character," the poster states.
"He is possibly from Northern Territory and was conning travellers using stolen vehicles, false IDs and will probably be back in Kununurra area again."
The poster then pleads with travellers to be careful when accepting farm work from anyone entering the hostel and to ensure they can prove who they are.
Details of what exactly caused the accident are unknown, but local media reports an Irish national was driving the car when it flipped several times, leaving the 25-year-old driver with serious head and back injuries and two female passengers with broken bones.
The owner of the Kimberley Croc Backpacker YHA in Kununurra confirmed the incident to News Corp Australia, however was away at the time of the incident and had little detail.
Staff members are concerned the man may return, and are unsure what his motives might be.
Western Australia Police released a statement saying: "WA Police has not received any complaints in relation to the incidents on this warning poster or in relation to the person mentioned"
