Unbelievable! Fans boo concussed umpire off field

A section of the crowd at last night's Essendon v Sydney game booed a concussed umpire as he was stretchered off the field by medical staff.

Swans player Nick Malceski collided with umpire Troy Pannell, knocking him out and leaving him sprawled across the ground in the third quarter of the game at Etihad Stadium.

Much of the crowd applauded Mr Pannell as he was transported off the field on a motorised scooter.

But a vocal segment of the crowd booed.

The group's antics triggered a wave of revulsion from fans present at the grounds and watching on TV.

Essendon player Michael Hibberd said it was poor form.

Some Essendon fans present at the game stressed it was just a smattering of fans.

Others only heard applause.

Medical officials said Mr Pannell is recovering. "He's pretty alert now, his maths is brilliant.... He's fine," Dr Bruce Reid told 3AW.

The Bombers were left hurting at the end. The Swans smashed the Dons by 50 points. Full match report here.
