Investigation ... authorities suspect Lacey Spears, left, may have poisoned her five-year-old son Garnett, right. Source: Facebook
A WOMAN who gained an online following blogging about her sick son may be charged after the five-year-old's death was reportedly ruled a poisoning.
Garnett Spears died on January 23 at Westchester County Medical Centre, about 50km north of New York City, where doctors discovered an alarming level of salt in the child's body, according to reports.
A source told Fox News that authorities are treating the death as a homicide caused by a lethal dose of sodium into the boy's feeding tube, which he had been using since he was a baby.
"It's evident by the nature of what was found in his body that somebody, in effect, poisoned him," said the source. "He died at the hands of somebody else."
Garnett's mother, Lacy Spears, spent years writing about her son's many hospital visits and dietary problems on her blog, Garrett's Journey, as well as other social media sites, where he became known as "Garnett the Great".
In her last post to Facebook, on April 18, Ms Spears put up a photo of her son holding a toy with the comment, "I want to carry on his legacy & the only way I can right now is to write about him & share his pictures."
Poisoned ... doctors discovered an alarming sodium level in Garnett's body.
But the Fox source said that shortly after the boy was hospitalised in January, his mother called a neighbour and asked her to destroy any evidence of feeding tubes in the home.
"She wanted the neighbour to dispose of incriminating evidence," the source said. "The neighbour never did get rid of it and police seized it."
Ms Spears, who has not been charged and denies doing anything to harm her son, told a close friend that she expects to be arrested, according to the Journal News.
Others who knew Ms Spears expressed shock over the homicide ruling.
"I've been on the phone all afternoon with mutual friends and they're all saying, 'I can't believe this,'" Shawna Lynch, a friend from Ms Spears' former hometown in Decatur, Alabama, told the News.
Blogger ... Lacey Spears built an online following writing about her son's medical troubles.
"We're devastated, mad, angry, hurt, shocked. We all wanted to believe Lacey and be there for her. But with the evidence the way it is, everyone feels the same way I do. Justice needs to be served."
It remains unclear whether Garnett ever needed a feeding tube in the first place, Fox notes, adding that locals reported seeing the boy eating solid foods without a problem.
Authorities are said to be investigating whether the boy's mother suffers from Munchausen by proxy, a psychiatric disorder and rare form of child abuse in which a desperate caregiver harms a child to seek the attention of others.
