A SINK-hole has opened up in one of London's busiest train stations overnight shocking early morning commuters who could see all the way to Bondi Beach and the Gold Coast.

At least that is what a group of Australian travel agents wanted more than 75,000 train goers to think as they entered the bustling Oxford Street Station today in an innovative tourism stunt to promote holidays Down Under.

The art installation stunt is the culmination of a two-week saturation program by Tourism Australia and partner tour operators to show Australia should not just be considered a dream holiday but an easily accessible attraction.

"I'm sure we've all heard the old wives tale of 'dig for long enough, you will end up in Australia' well, we've made that a reality and have brought a touch of Australia to London," Austravel general manager Karen Joyce said.

"We want to encourage stressed out Londoners to consider a holiday there and highlight that it doesn't take much to get a piece of Australian sun."

The art installation was live streaming vision from Bondi and the Gold Coast and images of Sydney Harbour in all its glory as outside the London station temperatures were barely in double digits and it was raining. The distraction was appreciated by passers-by who laughed as they peered into the "hole".

Austravel said it had seen a 10 per cent increase in bookings to Australia since January this year with Sydney the most popular followed by Port Douglas in Queensland and Melbourne in third spot.

A separate survey of 5000 people by TripAdvisor this week found New Zealand and Australia were the top two most desirable destinations by the British following the indirect endorsement by Prince William, Kate and baby Prince George and their high profile trip to the countries earlier this month.

According to Network Rail, more than 148 million people pass through Liverpool Street Station a year with more than 75,000 people in a morning rush hour alone.
