LAST month, Russell Crowe lobbied all and sundry at the Vatican (including the Pope) to get an endorsement for his controversial film, Noah, but according to the Vatican's official newspaper, Avvenire, it seems he won't be getting one any time soon.

Publishing its first review of the film, the newspaper called it "a lost opportunity, Noah without God".

Reviewer Mimmo Muolo said the film coloured the story "ecologically", "transforming the Biblical tale into a missed chance".

He also called the film "strange" and "perplexing" (though he did concede that it was "visually potent"), likening it more to Gladiator and Harry Potter films, saying that it strayed too far from its Biblical origins.

Muolo did not, however, call on Italians to boycott the film as some Christians have done in the US.

The controversy surrounding Darren Aronofsky's film hasn't hurt box office receipts, however. It opened strongly in the US two weeks ago, taking in an estimated $US44 million ($46 million) in its first weekend, and it has received largely positive reviews for its daring. The Hollywood Reporter described the film as a "fresh look at an elemental Bible story most often presented as a kiddie yarn".
