ONE person was in custody after about twenty students were stabbed at a US high school.

Dan Stevens, the spokesman for Westmoreland County emergency management, says the suspect is in custody at Franklin Regional High School in Murrysville, about 24 kilometres east of Pittsburgh.

A few of the students suffered serious injuries to the torso and are in surgery, but most of the stab wounds were to the victims' arms and legs and are not life-threatening, Mr Stevens said.

Early reports are that a person ran through the school slashing or puncturing students with a knife or other sharp object during a 30-minute rampage.

The Tribune-Review out of Pittsburgh is reporting that the suspect is believed to be a student and that he is in custody. An FBI specialist is expected to interview the suspect at the municipal building, where he is being held.

Mr Stevens said the students were stabbed in "numerous first-floor classrooms and hallways."

Two students were transported by medical helicopters and four students were taken by ambulances to local hospitals.

Matt Provenzo, an editor at the local Valley News Dispatch, described a chaotic scene shortly after 7am as he was dropping his son off at the high school. "When we got here, we saw a girl lying face down across the street who was being assisted by teachers and students."

He said the school was being evacuated as he arrived.

The school district put out a statement saying a "critical incident" had occurred at the school.

"All elementary schools are cancelled, the middle school and high school students are secure. Additional information will be released as soon as possible. Please keep our campus clear of traffic."

School and Murrysville police did not immediately return calls for comment.

Parents have been notified and may pick up their children at the school.

The incident is believed to have occured shortly after 7am.
