A MAN who had been missing for a year has been found dead by his ex-wife in the stairwell crawlspace of a home they'd rented out.

The body of 37-year-old Samuel McAlpine was discoved by his ex in a storage space under the stairs at his former home in Eagle River, Alaska – which had been rented out to oblivious tenants for a year.

His ex-wife made the grisly discovery when she entered the home on Monday to prepare for new tenants and immediately "noticed a foul odour", said Anchorage Police.

She then discovered her husband's year-old corpse in the storage space beneath the stairwell.

McAlpine was last heard from in March last year, when he told his mother was going on a date and never returned, reports Alaska Dispatch.

When they didn't hear from him, McAlpine's family were at first unconcerned, telling cops he had a habit of disappearing for weeks at a time.

However, his sister eventually reported him missing on March 29, 2013.

McAlpine and his ex-wife, who were going through a divorce, rented out their former home in last April after being unable to find a buyer.

But before the new tenants moved in, McAlpine apparently entered the property and entered the crawl space under the stairs, where he died, reports Anchorage Daily News.

"What he had done was go back into the home, and he had crawled into the area under the stairwell, a little area under the stairs used for storage, and that is where he died," said Anchorage police spokeswoman Anita Shell.

The renters, who were both employed by the US military, moved in and did not realise there was a dead body under their stairwell.

It is unclear how often the tenants were in the property, or whether they were deployed overseas, cops said.

"I don't know how often they were at the house," said Ms Shell. "Obviously this would have started to smell relatively quickly. I don't know if they were deployed, I don't have those details."

Police do not suspect foul play in McAlpine's death, but say drugs or alcohol may have been a factor.
