NOT since Janet Jackson's famous wardrobe malfunction has a nipple caused so much controversy at the Super Bowl.
Actually, on that occasion it was only a single nipple -- one of Jackson's breasts was exposed for a few seconds during a dance routine.
This time around there were four on show, belonging to two members of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Anthony Kiedis, the frontman, and bassist Flea performed at the half-time show of Super Bowl XLVIII that took place in New York last month.
According to online culture magazine Deadspin , the performance provoked 53 complaints to the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) from outraged American viewers.
One complaint read: "I found it indecent that I had to see the nipples of Anthony Kiedis and Flea on the half-time show. Both men and women should have to wear shirts. There are children watching for goodness sake!!!"
Other viewers complained that it was sexist to allow two male performers to go shirtless after the furore over Janet Jackson's performance, that was dubbed 'nipplegate' at the time.
Another told the FCC: "THIS PERSON ANTHONY KIEDIS WAS NAKED FROM THE WAIST, THRUSTING HIS PELVIS, SAYING THAT "WHAT HE GOT HE GOT TO GIVE IT PUT IT IN YOU."
"HE IS CLEARLY TALKING ABOUT HIS PENIS."
