A 17-year-old girl accused of attacking an elderly man on a bus pleaded with police saying 'I don't want to go' as they walked her to a police van.

ONE of the two young women accused of the shocking Gold Coast bus attack on an elderly man is the cousin of NRL bad boy Anthony Watmough.

Larna Watmough's father confirmed the family link as he ushered her from the Southport watchhouse after she walked free on bail yesterday, her face covered by a black hoodie, after reported death threats against her and co-accused Layni Cameron.

The pair sparked a furious public backlash after smartphone footage of them allegedly attacking 77-year-old vision-impaired pensioner Paul Buttigieg on a Surfside bus emerged last week.

Tears rolled down Mr Buttigieg's face as the former jockey recounted the terrifying attack in which he was allegedly punched and kicked multiple times, spat on and subjected to vile racist abuse.

An elderly man who was attacked by two women on a bus will make an official complaint.

Watmough, 21, and Cameron, 17, were named on Facebook and faced Southport Magistrates Court yesterday charged with serious assault and public nuisance after meeting police on Friday.

A sobbing Cameron did not apply for bail.

Watmough's father John voiced anger that his daughter was in handcuffs and urged her to "stay strong" from the public gallery.

The elderly man who was attacked by two teenage girls on a Gold Coast bus leaves the Coolangatta police station after making a complaint.

She was bailed on condition she report three times a week to police and not approach Mr Buttigieg.

Watmough and Cameron, who was remanded in custody, will reappear in court on April 23.

Outside court, defence lawyer Jodi Allen said both her clients had been subjected to death threats.

A passenger has filmed two women physically and racially abusing a male passenger on a Gold Coast bus.

"It is a situation where they've received death threats, and other threats to their personal safety have been made against them online,'' Ms Allen said.

Ms Allen said the backlash against her client had gone too far.

Mr Watmough claimed his daughter was being unfairly maligned.

"There are two sides to the story,'' he said.

But sipping on his daily beer at the Tweed Heads Bowls Club yesterday, a shaken and bruised Mr Buttigieg broke down as he talked about the attack.

"I've had people I don't even know ringing me up to see if I'm OK,'' he said. "I have to see the doctors on Tuesday to check me out. I'm still pretty upset."

Mr Buttigieg's career as a jockey ended in the late 1960s after a race fall at a country meeting.

He said he lived alone and enjoyed catching the bus to the bowls club for a beer and a bet.
