IT was about 7pm when Noelene Bischoff and her teenage daughter Yvana sat down for their fourth dinner in Bali. They had no idea it was to be their last.

The pair had already enjoyed some fish for lunch that day but opted to try more of the area's famed seafood. This time it was the local speciality - grilled mahi mahi fish - supplied by the fishermen whose boats dot the beachfront only metres from the restaurant.

It was the fourth day of their holiday adventure in Bali and they had already enjoyed a packed itinerary - Ubud, elephant riding, a traditional Balinese dance performance, an ancient temple visit. Next stop was to be two days on laid-back Gili Trawangan Island, off Lombok.

Padang Bai, on Bali's east coast, is off the Kuta-Seminyak tourist track and mother and daughter planned to spend a day in the little seaside village before catching a boat across to the Gili Islands.

It was about 3.50pm when Noelene and Yvana checked into the Padang Bai Beach Resort. They were assigned room number 7, adjacent to the restaurant which sits in the middle of the small but cosy hotel with picturesque views of the ocean and its stunning sunsets.

There was also a quick swim in the hotel's small pool for before dinner.

The Buddha Bar and Restaurant is set in the middle of the Padang Bai Beach Resort and boasts

"the only Italian built wood-fired pizza oven in Padang Bai".

Noelene and Yvana decided on a pizza - vegetarian with tomato salsa, mozzarella cheese, peppers and onions.

Their next choice was a Balinese chicken curry, with chicken fillet, eggplant and tomato served with steamed rice.

And the mahi mahi steak, served with a tomato salsa, garlic, butter, a side salad of lettuce, tomatoes and cucumber and chunky homemade French fries.

Ever since their shock deaths, in the early hours of last Saturday morning, suspicion has rested with that fish as a culprit for what Indonesia authorities first labelled fatal food poisoning or an allergic reaction.

But other diners ate the same dish, including the resort's manager Giovanni Bareato, and did not become ill. Mr Bareato said the relatively small fillet, used in the dish, was taken from the same whole fish which had been bought that morning fresh from the fishermen and was used in all the serves of the meal that night.

They had four drinks with their meal - a fresh watermelon juice, fresh mango juice, a Sprite and an iced lemon tea.

Before or after dinner they also appeared to have had a snack - an empty bag of Gluten-free Popcorners brand popcorn was found in the room along with a packet of Woolworths branded Crown Mints.

An opened bottle of Bailey's Irish Cream was found in the room but only a small amount had been drunk. There were also some empty water bottles, an empty Fanta bottle and some iced tea which had been opened but only a fraction had been consumed.

Police also questioned the manager and head chef at the Warung Dewa Malen, near Ubud, where the Bischoffs ate lunch earlier that day. Here they had Fritto Misto, a selection of fried seafood including tuna, calamari and prawns and a separate serve of fried calamari along with two desserts, crème caramel and crepes.

Again other diners ate from the same tuna and seafood and did not complain of being ill.

After dinner that night the pair went to their room and sometime around 10pm both become sick - dizziness, nausea and vomiting. It is not known what happened inside room 7 except that the pair was ill and appeared to have taken some medications.

Police say empty medication packets were later found on a bed. A bag containing 29 different prescription and non-prescription medications was found sitting on a small table in the room. One officer at the scene said it was neatly sitting on the desk and did not appear to have been tipped out or rifled through in a desperate search for medicines needed to treat two very sick people.

From the range of medications - which included anti-allergy an asthma drugs, antibiotics, migraine pills on prescription for Noelene and anti- malarias on prescription for Yvana - it seems that Noelene, a senior nurse, had packed a medical kit to cope with every possible problem they might encounter on their holiday in a developing country.

Tragically, it wasn't enough to save them.

Indonesian police say they will continue to hunt for answers over the mystery deaths and work with the Australian Federal Police.

Commissioner Adnan Pandibu, in charge of the investigation, said laboratory tests on vomit and other items found in the Bischoff's hotel room had found nothing suspicious and there was no evidence of criminal activity.

But as the pair's bodies arrived home yesterday in Queensland for autopsies after being flown back on Friday night, their shattered family came a step closer to having their many questions answered.
