A MELBOURNE baseball star has been killed in a drive-by shooting while jogging in Oklahoma.

Christopher Lane, 22, who grew up in Oak Park in Melbourne's north, was fatally wounded in the daylight shooting in the small town of Duncan on Saturday morning.

Lane was studying in the US on a sports scholarship at East Central University and was visiting his girlfriend Sarah Harper.

His father, Peter, said the family was devastated by the loss of a "sensational kid" just two weeks before his 23rd birthday.

Christopher Lane was killed in a drive-by shooting in Oklahoma.

"He was just an athlete going out for a run," Mr Lane said.

"According to police, it was just a completely random drive-by shooting."

Lane, the youngest of four children, had played for Essendon and Watsonia baseball clubs.

"He was a very talented athlete, he was a very talented junior footballer as well," Mr Lane said.

"He picked baseball because it gave him a chance to go to college."

Lane had only been back in Duncan for three days after an eight-week break in Australia with American girlfriend Sarah Harper, whom he had met at college.

The former student of St Bernard's College and Oak Park's St Francis de Sales Primary School had been studying business.

Mr Lane said his son hoped to get into the real estate industry in Australia or the US when he finished his degree.

Christopher Lane was gunned down as he jogged along an Oklahoma street.

He had no plans to turn professional, his father said.

"He played for the love of it."

Three teenagers have been arrested on first-degree murder charges.

Duncan Police Chief Danny Ford told reporters a motive for the shooting had not yet been determined.

Essendon Baseball Club president Tony Cornish described Lane as a fantastic player and good person.

Mr Cornish said the club was a family: "We love each other. The club will miss him."

The club's match against the University of Melbourne on Sunday will be turned into tribute to Lane.

The club was also creating new uniforms with Lane's initials and his number, 40, on a logo.
