England on top after umpire blunder

Aleem Dar's bad decision and Stuart Broad opting not to walk dominate a controversial third day of the first Ashes Test.

AUSTRALIA has been the latest victim of a bizarre umpiring controversy as England attempted to secure the first Test at Trent Bridge.

England will resume on the fourth day at 6-326, a lead of 261, with Ian Bell unbeaten on 95 and Stuart Broad a fortunate 47 not out in a partnership of 108.

The target may already be too much for a fragile Australian batting line-up on a slow, low turning pitch which has made run-scoring difficult.

SIDDLE REFUSES TO CRITICISE BROAD

Shane Watson had the astounding figures of 0-11 from 15 overs with 11 maidens from his lively seamers.

England has scored at little more than two an over for much of its second innings but with two days still to play there is plenty of time.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan believes Stuart Broad was within his rights to stand his ground, but says he will be remembered as a cheat.

The match would have been significantly closer had Stuart Broad been given out after he slashed a ball from Ashton Agar into the gloves of wicket-keeper Brad Haddin which flew to Michael Clarke at first slip.

Remarkably umpire Aleem Dar turned down the appeal and the Australians had already used both their reviews so the decision stood.

SOFT RULES ALLOW ANOTHER HOWLER

Broad was 37 and playing a strong foil for Bell with England 6-297, a lead of 232.

Fittingly it would have given Agar his third wicket as he continued an extra-ordinary debut.

Former Aussie paceman Stuart Clark talks through the Stuart Broad controversy, whether or not he should have walked, and how the Australians used their reviews.

A day after he blazed a history-making 98, the 19-year-old left arm spinner had England captain Alastair Cook caught at slip by Clarke for 50 and Jonny Bairstow caught behind for 15.

Agar finished the day with 2-82 from 35 overs.

ENGLAND STANDS BEHIND BROAD'S CALL

Cook was deceived by a delivery that bounced unexpectedly as he played across the line and Clarke leapt high, tumbling to take a fine one-handed catch.

Agar was mobbed by excited team mates as he celebrated his first Test wicket with unrestrained joy.

Australia's fielders express their astonishment after Stuart Broad was given not out.

The England skipper has a poor record at Trent Bridge. It was his first half-century in seven Tests at the ground.

Bairstow attempted to defend a delivery which turned sharply and took the outside edge on the way through to Haddin.

THE WORST HOWLER IN ASHES MEMORY

Australia's first wicket on day four was Kevin Pietersen.

Resuming on 35, Pietersen had played carefully for 64, his 31st half century in 95 Tests.

Ashton Agar has taken his first Test wicket, having none other than England captain Alastair Cook brilliantly caught at slip by Aussie skipper Michael Clarke for 50.

However his 23rd century eluded him when the former South African attempted to punch a delivery from James Pattinson off the back foot and dragged the ball into his stumps.

Cook and Pietersen added 110 in almost four hours such was the care they took with their batting.

DUMPED ARTHUR WANTS MORE COMPO

Pattinson thought he had another wicket when an inswinging yorker hit Bell low on the front pad.

The initial appeal was turned down and a review showed the ball clearly swinging down the leg side.

It was a review desperately needed later in the day against Broad but teams are allowed only two incorrect reviews per innings and Australia had used both.

Not for the first time Peter Siddle dismissed Matt Prior with a short ball.

Prior's enterprising innings of 31 in 42 balls came to an end when he completely mistimed a pull that lobbed to Ed Cowan at mid wicket.
