TONY Soprano changed my life forever.

Right from the start, from the very first episode.

You remember it. James Gandolfini is standing in the garden of Tony Soprano's house smoking a cigar and watching ducks on the swimming pool.

The ducks fly off the pool and away, and Tony Soprano clutches his chest and falls to the ground in his first panic attack.

A mafia man in the middle of an emotional crisis is suddenly surrounded by his family in suburban America.

Sucked in from that moment, all I wanted to do was watch more.

Go down to the DVD store and buy the whole series and spend the entire weekend with the Sopranos.

Watch episode after episode with Carmela, and Meadow and Tony Junior, and empathising with grown men who shoot each other and dismember bodies with a chainsaw.

But what James Gandolfini gave me was ultimately much more than just the Sopranos. It was the beginning of a new life for television which was wilting under the force of blockbuster cinema.

HBO and Gandolfini changed television forever - first with the Sopranos and then with an banquet of brilliant TV series including The Wire, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Six Feet Under and Deadwood.

And the feast continued with Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire, Girls and True Blood.

Characters like Al Swearengen, Walter White and Nucky Thompson came into our lives and lured us back from the movies onto our couch.

And then the other US networks played catch-up and the good times kept coming with Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Dexter, Californication and Homeland.

But Tony Soprano was the first and will always be the best.
