THE South Australian radio host at the centre of the ill-fated royal radio prank desperately wants to send a condolence letter to the family of nurse Jacintha Saldanha, but has not been allowed to.

Sources close to Mel Greig say she is devastated that Southern Cross Austereo management has blocked her from telling the Saldanha family how sorry she is.

A close friend said the once-bubbly presenter is still shattered following the death of Ms Saldanha and is frustrated that she is unable to seek proper closure on the issue.

Ms Saldanha transferred a prank phone call from Greig and co-host Michael Christian, who were impersonating the Queen and Prince Charles, to the Duchess of Cambridge's nurse when the pregnant royal was in a London hospital for severe morning sickness. Ms Saldanha, a mother of two, took her own life three days later.

"It's been really hard for her to move on, she hasn't been able to tell the Saldanha family how sorry she is for their loss and I think that's made it really hard for her," the close friend, who asked not to be named, told the Sunday Mail.

"Mel's wanted to send a condolence letter to the family since this happened.

"(But) she hasn't been allowed to send it and it really upsets her," the friend added.

Greig jetted home to Adelaide this weekend to celebrate her birthday amid mounting speculation surrounding her return to the airwaves.

She celebrated her 31st birthday with 40 family members and friends in a private room at the Hackney Hotel last night, booking the event under "Lem's Birthday" (Mel backwards) in an attempt to keep a low profile. Before the party she dined with a handful of friends on Melbourne St, North Adelaide, some of whom shared insight into her current state of mind.

Greig herself was unable to comment on a possible return to the airwaves but told the Sunday Mail she was relishing being back home and among her support network.

"I'm really sorry but I have nothing further to say at the moment. I'm just happy to be back in Adelaide to see my family and friends for my birthday," she said.

It was just a year ago that Greig farewelled Adelaide to start her dream job presenting the Hot30 Countdown for Southern Cross Austereo in Sydney. Now, while friends say she is pining for a return to the airwaves, Greig remains holed up interstate waiting for her employer to decide her fate.

"She'd like to return to work, she feels ready, but it's still not confirmed," a family member, who also asked not to be named, told the Sunday Mail. "She's still waiting for her work to offer a decent job for her to return to. It's pretty stressful for her. Mel lost her dream job, she loved doing the Hot30," the family member said.

Some industry whispers have suggested Southern Cross Austereo could be considering returning Greig to air in Adelaide, possibly in the breakfast slot at SAFM, a move which friends and family feel would be right for her.

It has also been rumoured she could be installed in a behind-the-scenes capacity, most likely as a producer. But the company has been tight-lipped on the details of Greig's return. Austereo chief Rhys Holleran last month wouldn't put a time limit on the issue, saying "we look forward to welcoming Mel Greig back when the time is right".
