MORE REPORTS: The man accused of the rape and murder of Jill Meagher - in a case that shocked Melbourne - will contest the charges.

Adrian Ernest Bayley, 41, appeared in Melbourne Magistrates' Court via video link for a short committal mention at noon today, where it was confirmed a two-day committal was listed for March 12 and 13.

The court heard an interpreter would be needed for the first day of that preliminary hearing.

Mr Bayley, charged with raping and murdering Ms Meagher in Brunswick on September 22 last year, sat mostly mute throughout today's ten-minute hearing.

His only words were "Yes I can, yes" after Deputy Chief Magistrate Felicity Broughton asked him if he could see and hear the court.

Mr Bayley sat in a video room at the Melbourne Assessment Prison clean-shaven in a black designer-style shirt with no tie.

During today's hearing, Ms Broughton granted a defence application to have an existing suppression order extended.

Last year, Deputy Chief Magistrate Felicity Broughton banned the publication of any damaging or potentially prejudicial material about Mr Bayley being published - predominantly on social media sites.

Ms Broughton today extended that order until March 12.

Chief Crown Prosecutor Gavin Silbert, SC, agreed that documents requested by the defence should be delivered within one month prior to the committal.

Two close female friends of Ms Meagher sat in court today.

At the end of the hearing, Ms Broughton asked Ms Spowart: "I take it there's no application for bail?"

Ms Spowart replied: "No Your Honour."

Mr Bayley was remanded to re-appear on March 12.

The killing of Ms Meagher generated widespread international media coverage and her death prompted 30,000 people to march along Sydney Rd on September 30.

During Mr Bayley's first appearance in court on September 28 last year, Ms Meagher's husband Tom sat with her brother Michael McKeon just metres from the accused man.

Outside court afterwards, Mr Meagher said: "I just wanted to say very briefly that despite the fact that this is the worst thing that we'll ever go through in our lives, I've been really humbled by the support of the Australian public (and) the tireless efforts of the police and all the friends and family who have put their lives on hold to help us out."

In late October, jail staff found Mr Bayley lying prone in his cell with a cut wrist, elbow and ankle.

He was later discharged from St Vincent's Hospital, where he had undergone surgery, and was returned to prison.

Ms Meagher, a 29-year-old ABC employee at the time of her death, had moved to Melbourne from Ireland with her husband three years ago.

Mr Bayley allegedly abducted her as she was walking home alone from a Sydney Rd bar.

Detectives found her body in a shallow grave beside a dirt road in Gisborne South, about 45km from Brunswick.
