A POPULAR restaurant in the Dandenong Ranges has been destroyed after going up in flames tonight.
Fire fighters were called to the Snooty Fox in Olinda just before 9pm to find flames consuming the roof of the tourist stop.
CFA spokeswoman Jenny Clow said it took more than 40 fire fighters 30 minutes to bring the blaze under control.
She said the property was deserted at the time and no one was injured.
"Nobody was in the restaurant at the time and nobody was in any of the premises adjacent to it either," she said.
Victoria Police spokeswoman Kelly Yates said fire investigators were en route to the scene to determine the cause of the blaze.
Surrounding residents are being urged to keep their windows and doors closed as police believe there may be asbestos in the air.
CFA Regional Duty Officer Don Tomkins said the building was extensively damaged.
"The entrance to the restaurant has collapsed and so has most of the roofing. It's obviously extensively damaged throughout, and fully involved when our fire fighters arrived at the scene," Mr Tomkins said.
"It's a very popular local restaurant and has a lot of people attend it, and will be a bit of a shock to the local community."
He said it was "extremely lucky" nobody was inside the building at the time.
"The restaurant was in operation earlier in the day. The last employee left the site about 5.30 this afternoon," he said.
He said the blaze had threatened nearby homes but fire fighters were able to contain the inferno in the restaurant.
The cause of the blaze is still unknown.
